Floods
A flood is an accumulation of water covering a landmass.
Floods can occur if bodies of water overflow covering land that is typically exposed to the air.
The covering of land by water is only considered a flood if it is temporary and endangers areas inhabited by, or used by humans.
Effects of Floods
Primary: Water damage to any areas not originally covered by water. The force of rushing water can also cause damage to nearby structures such as bridges, car, and buildings.
Secondary: Contamination of water, the spread of diseases, and killing crops and other native plant species.
Tertiary: Economic harm. Farmers losing homes and possessions, and tourism rates may decline.
Controlling Floods
Building man-made lakes to act as reservoirs.
Mechanical barriers such as dams, levees, or floodgates.
